I have been wanting to write an updated skincare post for awhile, but my skin has been all over the place since starting chemo. I finally think I have found the formula that works, or works 9 times out of 10 (chemo side effects can be quite unpredictable). Also, just to get it out of the way….none of these products are sponsored, I spent my own pennies!
So, before I started chemo I had a good rotation of products that worked for my combination skin. After my first round of chemo I had a horrible allergic reaction, like, broke out in a rash and sores covering my body. It was just as painful as it was scary looking. I had my follow up appointment with my oncologist and walked into the office and said “fix my face!!!”. I went on a pretty hefty steroid which cleared up the rash, but left my skin so dry. Chemo dries out your skin immensely, your whole body just screams for moisture. Nothing in my skincare arsenal was working. So I decided to order all new products….a gamble….but I was like what do I have to lose?
I have used a few sample Tula products in the past and actually quite liked them. And I am sure you have seen their products floating around other blogs or Instagram. I decided to order products based on what I needed, but also what I wanted as an outcome. Soft, luminous skin. Lofty goal while going through cancer treatments.
I love the Purifying Face Cleanser! It does not leave my skin feeling dry (or more dry than it already is) and it removes all makeup in one try! It has a nice refreshing scent, and this huge bottle will last me a good while. After I use the cleanser I basically lather on as much Illuminating Serum as I can. This stuff is liquid GOLD my friends. It gives my skin a nice dewy glow that actually lasts. I let that soak in while and then apply the Eye Renewal Serum. And if there is one product to add to your Christmas list, it is this! It has a cooling applicator that is actually cold to the touch and you can see an instant de-puffying effect happening right before your eyes. Seriously. I let all that sit for a minute, then I finish off with the Hydrating Day & Night Cream. I love this stuff. It is long lasting, but does not weigh your skin down. And once a week I have been using the Exfoliating Treatment Mask. I used to do a mask a couple times a week, but right now it is just too much. This is gentle enough on my skin and leaves it feeling nice and smooth.
Now on the few days following a chemo treatment when my skin is just flaking off, I add in the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery oil. It is the added boost my skin needs on those really dry days.
If there are spots that are just so stubborn with their dryness, I go in with the Lucas Papaw Ointment. I have been using this stuff for years as a lip balm and cuticle cream, but you can basically use it anywhere you feel dry. I even add a little to my surgery scares to keep them moist and healing the best they can.
I have been using this combination for a few months now, and I really am loving how my skin looks. I mean, skin is kind of all I have since the hair is gone. Ha!
